History:
Our church has its roots in the Old Sharon Church which was organized circa
1795 by Orange Presbytery. The first Sharon Church was a log building. It
burned and was replaced by a frame building on land 1.5 miles southeast of the
village of Wadeville on Dyson's Creek.
Later a third structure and new cemetery were developed and this third building
was used until 1903. In 1903 the congregation built a church in Mount Gilead on
Hotel Street (now known ad Haywood Street). The name was changed to Mount
Gilead Presbyterian Church.
On December 28, 1924, just twenty-one years later, the present church property
was purchased. The opening service of our present church and the name change
to First Presbyterian Church of Mount Gilead occurred on April 10, 1927. The
church has been a fixture on Main Street since that time.
Parts of the preceeding information was obtained from "The History of Sharon and First Presbyterian Church of Mount
Gilead, NC 1795-1970", By Catherine Watkins McKinnon
We are pleased to have Rev. Leila Evans as our pastor.
Traditions:
Easter: We have adopted the tradition of the Flowering of the Cross in
observance of the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Everyone brings flowers
from their garden and the cross is decorated in the sanctuary and remains on
display throughout the Easter service.
Christmas: We have adopted the tradition of decorating a tree with Chrismons™
ornaments and displaying the tree in our sanctuary throughout the Christmas
season. Chrismons™ are handmade Christmas tree ornaments with various
symbols of Christianity.
